The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC-2)

Since June 2015, the e-SUS AB platform has become universal, indicating that all municipalities utilize it to document actions undertaken in primary care, utilizing the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC) for recording diagnoses.

What is ICPC?

The International Classification of Primary Care follows a chapter-based structure somewhat similar to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD); however, these similarities are limited.

The ICPC is a classification system designed for primary care encounters. It enables the categorization of the patient's reason for visit, managed problems or diagnoses, primary or general health interventions, and organizes primary care session data within an episode-based framework. The classification was developed by the WONCA International Classification Committee (WICC) and was first published in 1987 by Oxford University Press (OUP). An updated version including revised criteria and definitions was released in 1998.

The second revision received acceptance within the Family of International Classifications maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This classification system was created in response to the increasing demand for quality data on primary care, aligning with international efforts to strengthen primary health care objectives globally, including WHO's goal of "Health for All."
